AstraZeneca to Invest Rs 250 Crore in Expanding its Global Innovation and Technology Centre in India

AstraZeneca India Private Limited (AZIPL) has announced a significant investment of Rs 250 crore ($30 million) to expand its Global Innovation and Technology Centre (GITC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. This expansion will create nearly 1,300 highly skilled positions aimed at driving innovation, enhancing efficiency, and streamlining global operations.

The newly expanded facility was inaugurated today by Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, the Honourable Minister of Industries Tamil Nadu, alongside British Deputy High Commissioner to India Ms. Christina Scott CMG, AstraZeneca Vice President for Asia Area Ms. Sylvia Varela, and AstraZeneca’s leadership team in India.

This investment celebrates AstraZeneca’s 45th year in India, marking a significant milestone in its growth journey. By 2025, the expanded GITC will leverage advanced technologies such as enterprise platforms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and supply chain analytics to transform healthcare outcomes.

Mr. Siva Padmanabhan, Managing Director of AZIPL, emphasized the company’s commitment to evolving technologies to better serve patients globally. Dr. Sanjeev Panchal, Managing Director & Country President of AstraZeneca Pharma India Limited (AZPIL), highlighted India’s crucial role due to its rich talent pool and dynamic digital ecosystem, reinforcing the company’s dedication to pioneering science and innovation.

Since its inception, the GITC in Chennai has transitioned from providing traditional IT services to becoming a key driver of AstraZeneca’s digital transformation. The facility currently spans 334,000 square feet at Ramanujan IT City, with plans to add 180,000 square feet in the next six months, making it AstraZeneca’s largest global capability centre.

AstraZeneca continues to transform healthcare for millions in India with its innovative portfolio in oncology, cardiovascular, respiratory, and rare diseases. With over 4,000 employees in India, including those at the GITC, the company is committed to nurturing a skilled, diverse, and future-ready workforce.
