Deakin University has officially opened its India campus, marking the launch of India’s first international branch campus. During a meeting at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed enhancing collaboration with Deakin in cyber security and acknowledged Deakin’s three-decade presence in India. This development aligns with the National Education Policy 2020’s vision of internationalizing Indian higher education.
The Australian High Commissioner to India, Excellency Philip Green OAM, described this as a landmark moment in Australia-India relations, setting the stage for deeper educational ties.
Deakin’s GIFT City Campus in Ahmedabad offers local students access to postgraduate courses in business analytics and cyber security at a reduced cost compared to international fees.
The campus features digital classrooms, libraries, and cyber security labs, digitally integrated with Deakin’s Australian campuses for comprehensive learning resources. Deakin plans to expand its academic portfolio to equip students for emerging technology sectors and foster educational equity through scholarships.
Moreover, the campus will serve as a startup incubator, offering short courses and support for entrepreneurial talent. It aspires to be a global hub, attracting students worldwide and providing Australian students a unique learning opportunity in Gujarat.
Deakin University also initiated industry engagements with the inaugural Deakin University x IABCA Leadership Roundtable, promoting dialogue on ‘Building Sustainable Futures across the Australia-India Corridor.’ The two-year program commences in July 2024, with applications closing on March 31, 2024.
This initiative represents a significant stride in international education collaboration between Australia and India, fostering cross-cultural learning experiences and strengthening ties between the two nations.
