In a significant move, Shri S Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) in the Indian government, unveiled two pioneering programs in Kerala. These initiatives, the “Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Intelligent Internet of Things (IIoT) Sensors” and India’s inaugural Graphene Centre, known as the “India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG),” were inaugurated at Maker Village in Kochi.
The CoE in IIoT Sensors, a collaborative effort between MeitY and the Government of Kerala, is a unique facility aimed at advancing sensor development within the realm of Intelligent IoT systems, spanning various applications in networks, devices, and sensor systems.
Simultaneously, the India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG) was established with the partnership of Tata Steel Limited and MeitY, along with support from the Government of Kerala. This center focuses on fostering research and innovation in the field of Graphene and 2D materials.
Digital University Kerala (DUK) and the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET)-Thrissur are technical partners for setting up these centers at Maker Village Kochi. The goal is to create fully equipped facilities for research, incubation, innovation, skills development, capacity building, testing, and certification in these areas.
Shri S Krishnan emphasized the significance of IIoT sensors and Graphene technologies in propelling digital transformation and economic growth. He highlighted that these centers aim to establish a comprehensive ecosystem for IoT Sensors and Graphene & 2D Materials startups in India, offering end-to-end solutions from material development to product/system development.
Additionally, during the event, Shri S Krishnan launched Hardtech 2024, an annual flagship program by Maker Village that brings together industry leaders, startups, investors, academia, and R&D organizations in the electronics hardware design and manufacturing sector.
The launch event witnessed the presence of several key dignitaries, including Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar, Additional Secretary, MeitY, and Shri Rajesh Singh, Joint Secretary & Financial Adviser, MeitY, GoI, among others.
