India’s Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Mansukh Mandaviya, introduced MedTech Mitra on Monday, an online platform aimed at supporting medtech innovators through various stages, including clinical evaluation, regulatory facilitation, and product adoption.
The initiative, jointly coordinated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), under the guidance of NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission, aligns with the vision of transforming India’s health sector by 2047.
Minister Mandaviya emphasized the essential role of the medical devices sector in India’s healthcare and expressed confidence that the collaborative effort would foster the development of affordable, high-quality medtech devices, reducing import dependence. He projected the medtech sector to grow into a $50 billion industry by 2030.
Highlighting the progress made in the sector, he pointed to initiatives such as production-linked incentives, investments in medical drug parks, and research policies. The move follows the recent launch of the National Medical Device Policy and a Rs 5,000 crore scheme to boost research in the pharmaceutical and medtech sectors.
Despite India’s significant position in Asia’s medical equipment manufacturing, it currently represents only 1.5% of the global medical devices market, with an 8% share in the global medtech research and development workforce.
