In a bold move to tackle complex health challenges, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has unveiled a new scheme to inspire groundbreaking solutions from the nation’s scientific community. Dubbed the ‘First in the World Challenge,’ this initiative seeks unprecedented, innovative ideas in health technology—including vaccines, drugs, diagnostics, and more—that have never before been conceived.
The ICMR has long supported research endeavors through funding and resources, and this latest call for proposals aims to leap forward with radically new concepts from scientists across India. The initiative is inspired by India’s pioneering Chandrayan 3 moon landing, positioning the ‘First in the World Challenge’ as another leap toward global leadership in health innovations.
Applicants are encouraged to submit bold, transformative proposals that promise significant, wide-reaching impacts. The focus is on pioneering biomedical and technological breakthroughs that could lead to first-of-their-kind health advancements on a global scale. However, the ICMR clarified that incremental knowledge or process innovations would not qualify for funding under this ambitious program.
This high-stakes, high-reward initiative acknowledges the variable odds of success but embraces the potential for monumental advancements in biomedical science. While not all projects may succeed, those that do could revolutionize the field.
Eligible participants include scientists and faculty from government medical colleges, ICMR institutions, universities, and recognized R&D labs, as well as NGOs and private research entities registered with the DSIR, Government of India.
