IIT Guwahati and Assam Government Initiate Healthcare Innovation Hub

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati recently hosted an important symposium aimed at propelling healthcare innovation across Northeast India, supporting the national “Make in India” initiative. This gathering saw prominent doctors and scientists discussing state-of-the-art healthcare technologies, orchestrated by the Assam Advanced Healthcare Innovation Institute (AAHII), a joint venture between IIT Guwahati and the Assam Government.

Dr. Ravi Kota, Chief Secretary of the Assam Government, inaugurated the event, highlighting the government’s commitment to enhancing India’s healthcare framework with innovative, self-sufficient solutions. Dr. Kota expressed, “It’s a privilege to kickstart this initiative in Assam, which exemplifies a pioneering collaboration between medical and engineering sectors, poised to revolutionize healthcare through homegrown innovations and strong institutional support.”

This collaboration is set to reduce healthcare’s import reliance by developing a cutting-edge AAHII campus equipped with a 400-bed super-specialty teaching hospital, advanced research laboratories, and residential amenities, positioning Assam as a frontrunner in indigenous medical technology development.

Professor Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, shared his excitement about this partnership, stressing the potential to make significant advances in healthcare accessibility and affordability through this venture. “Supported robustly by the Assam Government, our combined efforts aim to foster a self-reliant healthcare ecosystem,” he remarked.

The symposium also featured insights from AIIMS Guwahati’s Executive Director, Professor Ashok K. Puranik, and U.S.-based cardiologist Dr. Naba Goswami, who both emphasized the importance of integrating academic and industrial resources to tackle rural healthcare challenges effectively.

Established in 2022, the Assam Government IIT Guwahati Healthcare Foundation facilitates industry collaborations to enhance healthcare technology, while the planned AAHII campus will host centers of excellence in several cutting-edge medical fields. IIT Guwahati’s researchers showcased groundbreaking projects that promise to advance healthcare delivery across India.
