IIT Kanpur has made a significant mark in innovation by filing 122 Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in 2023, achieving an impressive licensing rate of approximately 14% to industry partners. This accomplishment underscores IIT Kanpur’s prowess in cutting-edge research and innovation, marking its third consecutive year of record IPR filings. To date, the institute has secured 1039 IPRs.
These 122 IPRs comprise 108 patents, 4 design registrations, 3 copyrights, and 1 trademark application, including 4 US and 2 China patents. Notable inventions span MedTech and Nano Technology, including a portable medical suction device, continuous lung health monitoring, solid-state sodium-ion batteries, and an affordable Braille learning device.
Prof. S Ganesh, Director of IIT Kanpur, expressed pride in the institute’s commitment to pushing research boundaries, positioning it as a leader in driving positive change through intellectual contributions.
The institute also witnessed a substantial increase in granted IPRs, with innovations ranging from a room temperature ammonia gas sensor to wastewater treatment methods, tactile watches for the visually impaired, and mastitis detection in bovines.
IIT Kanpur’s IP and Technology Transfer Office plays a pivotal role in disseminating technologies to the commercial sector. The institute’s dedication to enhancing India’s research and development landscape has resulted in its top position in the ‘Innovation’ category of the NIRF rankings 2023 and recognition for its contributions to assistive technology activities.
