ArcelorMittal has forged a groundbreaking partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to pioneer Asia’s maiden Hyperloop testing facility, slated to go live in Chennai by March this year. In a strategic move, AM/NS India, a joint venture comprising ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, will contribute a substantial 400 tonnes of steel to fabricate a 400-meter-long vacuum tube. This tube will serve as a critical apparatus for testing levitating pods, capable of hurtling through it at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour within the facility.
Moreover, ArcelorMittal’s India-based design and engineering arm will deploy a team of its highly skilled engineers to the site. They will offer their invaluable expertise and supervise the entire project closely. According to Pinakin Chaubal, Chief Technology Officer at ArcelorMittal, the collaboration represents a remarkable fusion of academic excellence and cutting-edge technology. IIT Madras stands at the forefront of deep-tech innovation in India, while TuTr Hyperloop, incubated at the campus, showcases immense potential to lead the Hyperloop industry, where steel plays a pivotal role.
This partnership holds a central objective: the advancement and eventual commercialization of Hyperloop technologies. These technologies aim to deliver high-speed, affordable, reliable, and environmentally sustainable transportation solutions. Intriguingly, the Ministry of Railways has also aligned itself with this transformative initiative, reflecting its significant impact potential on India’s transportation landscape.
