Indian Railways’ “Startups for Railways” Initiative: Driving Innovation on Track

Over 1,200 entities have registered on the Indian Railway Innovation Portal to participate in various Innovation Challenges, resulting in the awarding of 23 projects worth Rs. 43.87 Cr.

Indian Railways has embarked on a significant journey in fostering innovation by engaging with startups and various other entities. Launched on June 13, 2022, the “Startups for Railways” initiative, led by the Ministry of Railways, introduced the Indian Railways Innovation Portal, accessible at https://innovation.indianrailways.gov.in/.

The primary objective is to harness innovative technologies developed by Indian startups, MSMEs, innovators, and entrepreneurs to enhance operational efficiency and safety across the Indian Railways network. The Ministry of Railways is committed to addressing quality, reliability, and maintainability challenges. Importantly, under this policy, the Startup/MSME/Innovator/Entrepreneur retains exclusive ownership of the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) generated during the project.

The initiative has seen remarkable progress, with 23 projects awarded, amounting to approximately Rs. 43.87 Cr. In total, the Innovation Portal has seen registrations from 1,251 entities, including startups, individual innovators, MSMEs, R&D organizations, institutes, proprietorship/partnership firms, companies, LLPs, JVs, consortia, NGOs, and others.
