On Wednesday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) unveiled the India Graphene Engineering and Innovation Centre (IGEIC), a significant step towards achieving the ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision by 2047. The centre is designed to foster the graphene ecosystem in India, integrating startups, SMEs, academic institutions, and government efforts, including international collaborations.
Operating as a non-profit, IGEIC aims to become a leading hub for commercializing graphene technology. The focus will extend across various applications such as electronics, energy storage, healthcare, material coatings, conveyance systems, and sustainable material development.
S. Krishnan, Secretary of MeitY, emphasized the transformative potential of graphene and IGEIC’s role in propelling India to a leading position in the global technology landscape. “The launch of IGEIC under the ‘Graphene Aurora’ program signifies our dedication to advancing high-tech solutions and establishing a solid industrial framework for advanced materials,” Krishnan stated.
The center’s operations are split between its R&D facility in Thiruvananthapuram and its corporate and business development headquarters in Bengaluru. Supported by the Kerala government, its manufacturing unit is located in Palakkad, ensuring a complete ecosystem for the development and commercialization of graphene technologies.
Graphene’s unique properties are revolutionizing industries such as energy, construction, healthcare, and electronics. Earlier this year, MeitY also initiated a Centre of Excellence in Intelligent IoT Sensors and launched India’s first graphene center, the India Innovation Centre for Graphene (IICG), in Kerala, further bolstering the country’s position in advanced material innovation.
