New Report on Enhancing Innovation Commercialization through Tech Transfer Centres Unveiled

On March 11, 2024, a pivotal report conducted by the DST – Centre for Policy Research at Panjab University, titled “Enhancing Commercialization of Innovations through Technology Transfer Centres in India,” was unveiled. Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, a Senior Adviser at the Department of Science and Technology (DST), released this study, which focuses on advancing the efficiency and effectiveness of Technology Transfer Offices (TTOs) and the overall technology transfer process within India. This investigation delves into the organizational structure, operational methods, governance, capacity-building necessities, and the hurdles these centres face.

Dr. Gupta, during the release, highlighted the essential function of these centres in fast-tracking the journey of innovative ideas from research labs to the commercial market. This not only boosts India’s competitiveness on a global scale but also supports the nation’s Science Technology and Innovation endeavors aimed at facilitating an energy shift and meeting net-zero emission objectives.

The report, a product of research under the Facility for Low Carbon Technology Deployment (FLCTD) and supported by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), New Delhi, points out the significant role of TTOs in narrowing the gap between academic research and industrial application. It underscores the strategies and tools effective for the smooth transfer of technology from academic institutions to industries.

Offering insightful recommendations for policy-makers, the study suggests ways to enhance the technology transfer process, strengthen industry-academia partnerships, and create a comprehensive policy environment to foster innovation and facilitate technology transfer in India.

The event saw participation from Shri Sandeep Tandon, National Project Manager of UNIDO-FLCTD; Dr. Kashmir Singh, Professor at the Department of Biotechnology & Coordinator at the DST-Centre for Policy Research, Panjab University; and representatives from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency and DST.
