On Thursday, Qualcomm Inc. celebrated the opening of its latest design center in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking a significant milestone in the southern Indian tech landscape. The event saw the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Qualcomm President Cristiano Amon, highlighting the center’s focus on pioneering wireless connectivity, especially in WiFi and 5G technologies.
With an investment of 177.27 crore, the Chennai facility stands as a testament to India’s growing technological influence and Qualcomm’s commitment to wireless innovation. The center is set to be a cornerstone in Qualcomm’s global R&D, particularly in 5G advancements.
Union Minister Vaishnaw praised India’s digital strides and emphasized the country’s role as a frontrunner in technological innovation. He noted Qualcomm’s integral role in India’s digital evolution and the joint venture’s potential to enhance 5G connectivity across millions of Indian lives.
The establishment of the Qualcomm Design Center is expected to generate employment for approximately 1,600 tech professionals, contributing significantly to India’s skilled workforce and supporting the nation’s semiconductor design ambitions under the “Make in India” campaign.
Qualcomm’s initiative not only reinforces its leadership in the wireless communication arena but also underscores its focus on developing cutting-edge wireless technologies, including WiFi solutions. Rahul Patel, Group General Manager at Qualcomm, highlighted the center’s pivotal role in global connectivity innovations, with a special emphasis on India’s unique market.
This move by Qualcomm is reflective of India’s appealing IT sector environment, supported by proactive government policies at both central and state levels, encouraging the growth of technological expertise and innovation within the country.
