The Department of Science and Technology (DST) recently held a national brainstorming session titled “Transforming Science, Technology, and Innovation Ecosystems of India” at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in New Delhi. This pivotal event gathered experts to discuss enhancing India’s research and innovation landscape, with a focus on equity and inclusion, technological advancement, entrepreneurship, international cooperation, and effective governance.
During his inaugural address, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, highlighted the department’s leading role in evolving science and technology policies that have supported R&D initiatives for years. He stressed the importance of developing responsive policy interventions in various sectors to promote research and aid deep tech startups, emphasizing the need for policies that adapt to the rapid transformations within the S&T ecosystem.
Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, President of INSA, described the science, technology, and innovation policy formation as a comprehensive exercise, drawing on consultations with about 50,000 stakeholders to manage diverse demands. He pointed out the significant impact of thoughtful policies, such as the National Geospatial Policy, which has unlocked the economic potential of rural lands by clarifying ownership.
Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Adviser at DST, outlined the department’s policy research efforts and the formulation of the Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy (STIP) 2020. The session aimed to forge a detailed national science policy roadmap, pinpoint policy measures for key challenges, enhance collaboration across sectors, and establish a platform for continuous policy dialogue and joint development.
