DoT Calls for Proposals to Develop Quantum Technologies for Enhancing Citizens’ Lives

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a call for proposals under the “Quantum Standardisation and Testing Labs” initiative, inviting Indian academic and R&D institutions to submit their projects. This initiative aims to advance quantum technologies, ensuring their interoperability, reliability, and security in communication systems, according to a press release from the Ministry of Communication on July 7.

These labs will foster collaboration between quantum technology developers, testing equipment manufacturers, and academic researchers to harness the potential of quantum advancements. Quantum technology has applications in various sectors, including pharmaceuticals, energy, finance, transport, defense, communications, and healthcare. By manipulating subatomic particles, it can significantly improve everyday life, contributing to innovations like lasers, LEDs, transistors, and medical imaging.

The deadline for proposal submissions is August 5, 2024. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s vision for ‘Jai Anushandhan,’ focusing on enhancing lives through advanced telecom products and technologies.

The National Quantum Mission (NQM), approved on April 19, 2023, with an outlay of Rs.6003.65 Crore over eight years, supports scientific and industrial R&D, fostering an innovative ecosystem in Quantum Technology (QT). This move aims to make India self-reliant in quantum technologies and set global standards in this cutting-edge field.

The Quantum Standardization and Testing Labs will set benchmarks for integrating quantum communication into current and future networks. They will also develop testing facilities to validate quantum devices, ensuring they meet national and international standards. These labs will provide industry stakeholders, startups, and local telecom entities access to advanced quantum technologies at a nominal fee, covering technologies like single photon and entangled photon sources, quantum detectors, memories, repeaters, and communication modules.
