Google has expanded its ‘AI Overviews’ feature to include India among five other nations. The tech behemoth is launching this service in India with support for both English and Hindi, incorporating unique features first seen in its Search Labs trials.
The company explained that the addition includes a language toggle to switch effortlessly between English and Hindi, and a ‘Listen’ button to enable Text-To-Speech functionality, enhancing user interaction.
These features are now available in six countries: India, the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil, each offering support in local languages.
Hema Budaraju, Senior Director of Product Management for Search at Google, noted that Indian users have engaged with AI Overviews more frequently than those in other countries. “To enhance user experience, we have introduced a new layout for linking directly to relevant websites on desktop searches, and mobile users can access these links through site icons located at the top right of their screen,” Budaraju added.
Google’s data indicates that AI Overviews are especially useful for users exploring complex topics, encouraging repeat engagement due to the improved helpfulness of search results.
Budaraju emphasized Google’s commitment to refining the Search experience through AI Overviews, aiming to connect users with a broad spectrum of information and viewpoints.
Furthermore, clicks from AI Overview-enhanced search result pages are of higher quality, leading to longer durations spent on linked websites. “This ongoing enhancement of the Search function is pivotal in driving better-qualified web traffic,” Google stated.
The company is also experimenting with embedding additional relevant links within AI Overviews’ texts to simplify direct access to interested sites for users.
