IIT Madras Launches National Academic XR Collaboration for Advancing VR and AR Innovation

IIT Madras has introduced the XTIC-APP (Experiential Technology Innovation Centre Academic Partnership Program) to propel the development of the extended reality (XR) sector in India. This initiative is designed to nurture a new generation of XR developers and designers for the global market. The unveiling of XTIC-APP is set for November 17, 2024, during the XR Summit at the IIT Madras campus.

The XTIC-APP aims to strengthen the Indian XR ecosystem by fostering a skilled workforce in augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). This effort will support local businesses and academic institutions, bridging the gap between applied and foundational XR research. The program is also expected to bolster the start-up landscape and help launch XR educational offerings on a global scale.

Professor M. Manivannan, the head of XTIC at IIT Madras, emphasized the institute’s commitment to making India a leader in XR technology by 2047. He highlighted the importance of integrating academic efforts to produce top-quality XR system designers and developers.

The summit will also feature the inaugural ‘Game Jam’ on XR Readiness, showcasing innovations in XR technology and its applications across various industries. Additionally, the XR Startup Awards will be presented by Steve LaValle, a notable figure in VR development.

Key academic leaders from across India will formalize their involvement by signing a Memorandum of Understanding at the event, marking a significant step toward advancing India’s position in the XR field. This gathering at IIT Madras will not only highlight breakthroughs in XR hardware and software but also enhance the creation of immersive and gamified XR content in India.
