Launched on March 7, 2024, the IndiaAI Mission is a pioneering initiative by the Government of India to democratize AI benefits and establish global leadership in artificial intelligence. To achieve this, the mission is anchored on seven key pillars that aim to strengthen the domestic AI ecosystem, with a strong focus on ethical and responsible AI.
The ‘Safe & Trusted AI’ pillar highlights the importance of developing India-specific AI governance tools and frameworks that address the country’s unique socio-cultural and economic diversity.
In its first Expression of Interest (EoI) round, the IndiaAI Independent Business Division (IBD) selected eight innovative projects. These covered critical areas such as AI Bias Mitigation, Privacy-Enhancing Tools, Explainable AI, and Ethical Certification, showcasing India’s commitment to responsible AI.
Building on this momentum, the second EoI round is now open for applications until January 9, 2025. Indian academic institutions, start-ups, R&D organizations, and companies are invited to propose projects under key themes, including:
- Watermarking & Labelling: Ensuring traceability and security of AI-generated content.
- Ethical AI Frameworks: Aligning AI with global standards while respecting human values.
- AI Risk Management: Creating safe deployment tools for public services.
- Stress Testing: Evaluating AI performance under extreme conditions.
- Deepfake Detection: Mitigating risks associated with misinformation.
This initiative, implemented by IndiaAI under the Digital India Corporation (DIC), underscores the government’s vision of leveraging AI for inclusive and ethical growth.
