India is set to launch the IndiaAI Mission portal within a week, aiming to democratize access to AI resources nationwide. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this during a press conference in Bengaluru, highlighting the initiative’s potential to boost innovation and streamline tasks through AI technology.
The portal will provide a shared infrastructure of around 18,000 GPUs to empower startups and researchers in developing AI solutions. “We have established a mechanism for this shared computing facility,” Vaishnaw stated, noting that ten companies, including Tata Communications and Jio Platforms, were selected to source these GPUs.
India’s Indigenous AI model will debut with an initial 10,000 GPUs, with the remaining 8,693 to follow shortly. This facility is expected to benefit students, researchers, and developers, offering AI computation at significantly lower costs than global standards. While international models cost $2.5–$3 per hour, India’s subsidized rates are under ₹100 per hour, with flexible plans for affordability.
Over 70% of the GPUs are high-end models like Nvidia’s H100, with Yotta Data Services alone contributing 9,216 GPUs. The mission has already seen overwhelming support, achieving nearly nine times the GPU capacity of DeepSeek and two-thirds that of ChatGPT in under ten months.
The IndiaAI Mission represents a significant step toward building safe, secure, and cost-effective AI solutions, further solidifying India’s position as a global AI powerhouse.
