Indian CEOs Emphasize AI Governance for Effective Adoption, Finds IBM Study

An IBM Institute for Business Value study reveals that Indian CEOs prioritize AI governance as crucial to the adoption and scaling of generative AI within their organizations. The global survey, which included 3,000 CEOs across more than 30 countries and 26 industries, highlighted that 71% of Indian CEOs believe trusted AI is unattainable without robust AI governance from the outset.

Despite this strong conviction, only 42% of Indian CEOs report having effective generative AI governance currently in place. This discrepancy is often due to organizational uncertainties about the expectations surrounding AI initiatives. Interestingly, 75% of these leaders prefer motivating their teams with a shared vision rather than setting strict standards, although 31% recognize that their employees are not fully aware of how strategic decisions affect them.

Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India & South Asia, noted the critical need for AI guardrails to ensure responsible business growth and competitive success. He acknowledged the existing gap between the intent to implement AI safeguards and their actual execution, emphasizing the complexities involved in establishing AI governance.

Key findings from the study also underline the importance of human factors in AI success, with 71% of CEOs believing that people’s acceptance of AI is more crucial than the technology itself. Furthermore, 49% are creating new positions for generative AI, indicating a significant workforce transformation in the near future.

As Indian organizations strive to enhance customer experiences and drive product innovation, nearly half cite regulatory challenges as a significant obstacle to innovation, underscoring the need for a balanced approach to AI integration and regulatory compliance.
