Indian Scientists Pioneer ‘Brain on a Chip’ Technology, Set to Transform AI Landscape

In a landmark achievement, a team from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed a “brain on a chip” technology that represents a significant leap in computing. This breakthrough allows the chip to store and process data across 16,500 states within a molecular film, offering a robust alternative to traditional binary computing.

Published in the respected journal Nature, this research was spearheaded by Sreetosh Goswami at IISc’s Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, with collaborative efforts from Texas A&M University and the University of Limerick for simulations and modeling.

This neuromorphic technology mimics the human brain’s functionality, marking a departure from conventional binary systems. It supports dynamic learning from environmental interactions, potentially elevating AI to new heights.

Key to this innovation is a molecular system designed by Prof. Sreebrata Goswami. It leverages natural ion movements to emulate brain-like data processing and storage, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing spatial needs. The team also developed a custom circuit board that precisely measures molecular states at unprecedented voltages and speeds.

This breakthrough could democratize advanced AI applications, enabling tasks like training large language models on everyday devices, thereby overcoming current limitations in hardware suitability and energy consumption.

Highlighting its national significance, Prof. Navakanta Bhat noted that this technology aligns with the India Semiconductor Mission and could position India as a frontrunner in global AI hardware innovation. With ongoing support from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the IISc team is working towards an integrated neuromorphic chip, underscoring a fully indigenous development from material to system. This advancement not only boosts India’s tech credentials but also sets the stage for future global leadership in AI technology.
