India’s AI Drive: Reliance Plans World’s Largest Data Centre in Jamnagar

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries is poised to construct the planet’s biggest data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The company has acquired AI chips from Nvidia, following the announcement at the October 2024 Nvidia AI Summit that both entities would collaborate on AI infrastructure. Nvidia will supply its advanced Blackwell processors to power a proposed one-gigawatt data centre.

Speaking at the summit, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang emphasized India’s need to produce its own AI capabilities, asserting that exporting data to import intelligence is inefficient. Mukesh Ambani echoed these views, highlighting India’s robust digital connectivity and the potential to harness AI for widespread prosperity. Ambani also underscored that aside from the US and China, India boasts a top-tier connectivity network.

In September 2024, Reliance and Nvidia formed a partnership to develop AI supercomputers and large language models (LLMs) catering to India’s diverse linguistic landscape. Nvidia later announced a similar alliance with the Tata Group, reinforcing its commitment to the country’s flourishing AI scene. Meanwhile, the Indian government has earmarked over Rs 10,000 crore to foster startups, AI projects, and LLM initiatives.

Despite these efforts, India’s semiconductor sector is still in its infancy, lacking local chip manufacturing plants. Setting up fabrication facilities is a complex, capital-heavy endeavor that demands a specialized workforce. While India’s journey in AI remains nascent, ongoing alliances and investments signal an unwavering ambition to position the nation as a global leader in this transformative field. As momentum grows, India is steadily positioning itself as a pivotal driver of AI innovation.
