OpenAI has unveiled a new beta tool called Tasks in ChatGPT, giving Plus, Team, and Pro subscribers the ability to schedule actions and receive reminders. Rolling out today, this enhancement transforms the chatbot into a function more akin to conventional digital assistants such as Google Assistant or Siri—only now powered by ChatGPT’s language prowess.
With Tasks, users simply specify their request and desired timing. Whether it’s a 7AM weather update, a renewal reminder for your passport, or a bedtime knock-knock joke, ChatGPT now orchestrates one-time or recurring tasks for you.
To activate this feature, subscribers select “4o with scheduled tasks” within ChatGPT’s model picker. Afterward, they type in instructions, including time frames or repeat intervals. ChatGPT also offers proactive suggestions based on conversation topics, but users must approve them first. Tasks can be managed through chat threads or in a designated Tasks section on the profile menu, making modifications or cancellations hassle-free.
When a task is completed, notifications appear on web, desktop, and mobile. However, only 10 tasks can run concurrently. OpenAI has not indicated if this capability will become available to free users, which may suggest that it will remain exclusive to paid tiers. Alongside Tasks, OpenAI is rumored to be developing “Operator,” an autonomous AI agent that autonomously manages computer operations, and a project known as “Caterpillar,” which could further expand ChatGPT’s ability to retrieve data, analyze information, visit websites, and notify users when tasks are done. These developments signal a broader shift in ChatGPT’s evolution and capabilities.
