A group of leading Japanese technology firms has recently showcased a groundbreaking 6G prototype device. This innovative wireless device boasts transmission speeds of up to 100 Gbps across 100 GHz to 300 GHz frequency bands and can transmit data over distances of up to 100 meters. These speeds are roughly 20 times faster than those offered by the existing 5G networks.
Amidst the growing adoption of 5G technology, this consortium, including major players like DOCOMO, NTT Corporation, NEC Corporation, and Fujitsu Limited, is already pivoting towards the next technological frontier in mobile connectivity. The development of this 6G device, initiated in 2021, reflects the industry’s anticipation of the forthcoming 6G era.
6G technology is expected to revolutionize the field with high-capacity wireless communication, enabling ultra-HD video streams and significantly reduced latency. These capabilities are crucial as they meet the burgeoning demands of AI and IoT applications, such as real-time controls required in autonomous vehicles.
While the prototype demonstrates promising speeds, 6G technology remains in the nascent stages of development. It is projected to be commercially available by 2030, but substantial advancements are needed to accommodate the high-frequency operations, including the development of new cellular infrastructure and device antennas.
However, it is crucial to note that the actual user experience may vary due to technical constraints similar to those observed with 5G, where actual speeds did not always align with theoretical maximums due to limitations in signal travel and penetration.
