Two years following his earlier skeptical remarks about India’s prospects in AI, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on his recent visit to New Delhi, strongly endorsed India’s potential in the AI sector. Speaking alongside Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Altman pointed out that India has become OpenAI’s second-largest market, having tripled its user base within the past year.
During his visit, Altman engaged with several Indian business leaders, including Paytm’s Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Snapdeal’s Kunal Bahl, among others. His discussions contrast his initial 2023 comments when he doubted India’s capability to develop foundational AI models like ChatGPT, calling the task “totally hopeless.” However, he later clarified that his comment was about the challenges of competing with big AI players in creating cost-effective models.
The visit occurred shortly after India’s finance ministry banned AI tools like ChatGPT on government devices due to security concerns. Addressing cost-effective AI development, Altman acknowledged the ongoing expense but noted significant advancements in model training that could spur creative and technological leaps, particularly in India.
Amidst global competitive pressures, notably from China’s DeepSeek AI, Altman projected a tenfold decrease in the cost of AI development units within a year. This reduction is anticipated to transform AI accessibility and application, positioning India as a frontrunner in the AI revolution.
This backdrop of dramatic advancements and strategic shifts in AI underscores the pivotal role India and cost innovations play in shaping the future of technology, marked by OpenAI’s substantial investments and the rapid adoption of AI applications across the country.
