Microsoft-backed GitHub revealed on Tuesday that its developer community in India has surged to over 17 million, marking a 28% growth in 2024 and establishing India as the fastest-expanding developer community globally.
India now ranks as the second largest contributor to GitHub, particularly notable in educational usage, contributions to public generative AI projects, and open-source initiatives. This significant involvement highlights India’s ascent as a pivotal tech hub, according to GitHub’s latest “Octoverse” report.
India: A Major Player in AI Development
In the post-hype landscape of 2023, Indian developers and organizations have shifted their focus from mere experimentation to achieving tangible outcomes with AI. India is the world’s second-largest community contributing to generative AI projects on GitHub, trailing only behind the US, showing a remarkable 79% increase since last year. India also recorded a 95% annual growth in these contributions, ranking third globally, following the US and Hong Kong. GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke remarked on the burgeoning Indian developer community’s extensive use of AI, suggesting that the next major global corporation could emerge from India.
Leading Force in Open-Source Contributions
Indian developers continue to play a crucial role as the world’s second-largest contributors to open-source projects, driving innovation and influencing global software development. These contributions are not just technical but are also ushering in societal advancements through significant projects like ERPNext.
Highlighting Education and Social Impact
One notable project, leading in GitHub’s ‘For Good First Issue’ category, showcases India’s commitment to addressing societal challenges and promoting sustainable development through technology. The substantial number of GitHub Education users in India, boosted by the 2020 National Education Policy which integrates coding and AI into school curriculums, is set to position India to surpass the US as the largest developer community by 2028.
