Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the prowess and creativity of India’s young tech innovators in a recent post on X, reacting to comments made by GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke. Modi highlighted the significant role of Indian youth in the tech arena, stating, “Indian youth are at the forefront of innovation and technology.” This acknowledgment came shortly after Dohmke’s comments on India’s rapidly growing role as a technological powerhouse, mentioning, “India is emerging as a global tech giant with the fastest growing developer community in the world.”
Dohmke’s post praised India for leading the global surge in developer population, pointing out its pivotal role in artificial intelligence advancements. He noted that Indian developers are not only adopting AI but are also innovators in using AI to develop AI technologies. According to GitHub’s latest Octoverse report, India recorded 5.2 billion contributions with 108 million new repositories in 2024 alone, marking it as the nation with the quickest expanding developer base.
GitHub’s Octoverse report also highlighted a 59% increase in generative AI project contributions and a 98% rise in new projects in 2024. It forecasts that India could surpass the United States in developer numbers by 2028, thanks to its rapidly growing tech community. The report emphasizes a 95% increase in generative AI contributions over the previous year, showcasing India’s growing influence and GitHub’s expanding operations within the country.
