Tata Electronics announced on Thursday its new partnership with Taiwan’s Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC), setting the stage for a major semiconductor manufacturing push in India. The collaboration aims to develop the Dholera wafer fabrication unit, which will be India’s first AI-enabled, greenfield semiconductor fab located in Gujarat.
Under the agreement, PSMC will assist in the design, construction, and provide a wide range of technology licensing and engineering support to Tata’s project. This partnership will leverage PSMC’s technological expertise and capabilities to boost Tata’s entry into semiconductor manufacturing and expand its influence in the global market.
“Partnering with PSMC accelerates our semiconductor manufacturing ambitions and positions us strongly in the global semiconductor industry,” said N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons.
The project, with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore (approximately USD 11 billion), aims to produce up to 50,000 wafers per month. This significant investment is expected to generate over 100,000 skilled jobs, aligning with Tata Group’s vision to establish a multi-fab hub in Dholera.
Frank Huang, Chairman and CEO of PSMC, highlighted the mutual benefits of the partnership, noting that it provides PSMC and the Taiwanese sector a strategic advantage in the burgeoning Indian market while supporting India’s goals for self-sufficiency in semiconductor manufacturing.
