Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia announced that the introduction of 5G technology is projected to boost the Indian economy by approximately $450 billion by 2040. Speaking at the Global Standards Symposium in New Delhi, Scindia emphasized the far-reaching impacts of 5G beyond enhanced internet connectivity, outlining its critical role in fostering smart cities and advanced technological infrastructures.
Scindia highlighted the swift deployment of 5G across India, with the technology reaching all states and Union Territories, 98% of districts, and 80% of the population within just 22 months. He pointed out the transformative effects of 5G on various sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, and manufacturing, underscoring the technology’s potential to revolutionize these industries.
The Minister also stressed the importance of global cooperation to fully harness the capabilities of emerging technologies such as 5G, AI, and IoT, advocating for the establishment of international standards to ensure seamless global operations. He underscored the significance of dialogue and collaboration in integrating these technologies, which are pivotal in transforming industries and economies worldwide.
Furthermore, Scindia called for strong governance frameworks to manage the ethical implications and regulatory needs concerning AI and IoT, aiming to prevent privacy violations, biases, and transparency issues. He encouraged a comprehensive policy framework to support equitable benefits from future technologies, including 6G, and prevent widening the digital divide.
Scindia’s vision extends to fostering international partnerships and setting standards to shape a future where technological advancements are universally beneficial and innovation is limitless.
