Japanese imaging and optical technology leader Canon is exploring opportunities in India’s burgeoning semiconductor sector. The company is in active discussions with manufacturers establishing semiconductor fabrication units in the country, aiming to supply its cutting-edge lithography equipment essential for chip production.
Toshiaki Nomura, President and CEO of Canon India, emphasized the global interest in India as a hub for semiconductor manufacturing. “Many chip manufacturers are considering India as their next production base. We are engaging with them to offer our advanced technology and services,” he stated.
Canon plans to support these facilities with its state-of-the-art lithography machines, which are critical for creating robust manufacturing ecosystems. Nomura expressed confidence in Canon’s role, adding, “Once facilities are set up, we will provide the equipment and offer strong support to ensure their success.”
Although specifics of the discussions remain confidential, Canon is optimistic about contributing to India’s semiconductor ambitions. “We are actively negotiating and conducting on-ground discussions,” Nomura confirmed.
India stands out as one of Canon’s fastest-growing markets, with the company reporting double-digit growth in the region. Factors such as economic expansion, urbanisation, and a youthful demographic have driven this momentum. “In 2024, we are achieving near double-digit growth, and I’m confident this trajectory will continue across all our business segments,” said Nomura.
Canon’s engagement reflects its commitment to aligning with India’s vision of becoming a global semiconductor manufacturing hub.
