India Boasts 99% 4G Coverage and Expands 5G Network with 4.42 Lakh BTSs

India has achieved a near-universal coverage of 4G, enveloping over 600,000 villages, and has rapidly expanded its 5G infrastructure with approximately 442,000 base transceiver stations (BTSs), as stated by the Ministry of Communications. This development underscores a significant leap in the country’s telecom sector, paving the way for a transformative era marked by high data usage, a large user base, and a supportive policy environment, fostering growth and innovation.

On the eve of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, which is observed annually on May 17 since 1969 and focuses this year on ‘Digital Innovation for Sustainable Development,’ the Ministry highlighted India’s strides in establishing a world-class telecom ecosystem. Strategic international partnerships are being forged to position India as a global leader in digital innovation and infrastructure.

The Ministry also noted the successful role of telecom diplomacy in attracting new ventures, supporting domestic startups, and establishing partnerships with global industry leaders. This effort has shown tangible results, reducing the import-export gap with an increasing reliance on domestic ‘Made in India’ technology for the 5G era.

In a notable achievement, Indian companies exported telecom equipment and accessories worth ₹25,200 crores last year, driven by government efforts to promote local products internationally. Companies like Astrome, WiSig, and VVDN are making significant strides abroad, showcasing Indian innovation on global platforms and securing business leads potentially worth around $100 million.

This progress highlights India’s commitment to spearheading innovation and securing a leading position in the global telecommunications landscape.
