The Linux Foundation, a global leader in fostering open source innovation, has announced the launch of LF India. This new initiative aims to empower India’s growing developer community, enterprises, and government organizations by promoting open collaboration and supporting key open source projects in areas like cloud native, telecommunications, Edge/IoT, blockchain, security, and domain-specific AI technologies.
With nearly 200,000 developers in India contributing to Linux Foundation projects, LF India seeks to become a regional hub for innovation. It will serve as a “sandbox for innovation,” accelerating open source software (OSS) projects and offering training, meetups, and local events to nurture the community.
Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, emphasized the importance of LF India, stating, “This milestone supports our mission to expand global awareness of open source. India’s rapid adoption of open technology, backed by policy and investment, is shaping its developer community into the largest globally by 2028.”
India’s robust digital public infrastructure, built on open source software, is fueling a deep tech startup ecosystem and creating opportunities for developers to contribute to transformative technologies. LF India will focus on fostering local innovation with a global impact, as noted by Arpit Joshipura, GM/SVP of LF India.
The region’s commitment to open source is highlighted by upcoming events such as KubeCon + CloudNativeCon India 2024 in Delhi and 2025 in Hyderabad, along with the Open Source Summit India 2025. For more details, visit the Linux Foundation’s events page.
