Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has highlighted a significant boost in India’s manufacturing sector, attributing a 200% increase in manufacturing jobs over the past two years to the successful ‘Make in India’ initiative. Celebrating its tenth anniversary, this initiative has dramatically reshaped India’s economic and industrial landscape since its launch by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014.
Goyal emphasized the remarkable turnaround in mobile phone manufacturing, a sector that has seen substantial growth and nearly complete local production. Before the initiative, in 2014, India imported mobile phones worth ₹48,609 crore. Fast forward to the 2023-24 period, and imports have dropped to ₹7,665 crore, an 85% decrease, illustrating a major shift towards domestic production.
The minister also underscored the broader impact on the manufacturing industry, noting that the surge in jobs not only supports thousands of families but also strengthens India’s position as an industrial leader on the global stage. In a recent post on X, Goyal expressed his pride in the initiative’s success, stating, “Today marks #10YearsOfMakeInIndia, a transformative initiative that has revolutionized India’s manufacturing landscape and bolstered our economic growth.”
The ‘Make in India’ campaign has been pivotal in driving forward India’s vision to reduce import dependency and establish itself as a global manufacturing hub, making substantial strides in employment and industrial productivity.
