The trend of international tech giants establishing manufacturing bases in India is gaining momentum.
Nokia has entered into a collaboration with India’s Dixon Technologies to manufacture broadband devices within the country. This alliance will see Dixon producing 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) and Wi-Fi beacons for Nokia at its Noida facility, aiming to produce 10 million units annually and creating jobs for 3,000 individuals.
Dixon Technologies Vice Chairman and Managing Director Atul B Lall expressed that this partnership marks a significant achievement for India’s manufacturing landscape, aligning with the country’s aim towards self-sufficiency. “The initiation of local manufacturing for these sophisticated broadband devices reinforces our dedication to enhancing India’s electronics manufacturing capabilities,” he stated.
Although widely recognized for its mobile phones, Nokia is also a dominant player in the broadband infrastructure arena, notably powering a large portion of India’s Fiber to the Home (FTTH) infrastructure. According to Nokia, this venture will enable the production of GPON, 5G FWA, and Mesh Wi-Fi devices designed to support speeds up to one gigabit per second per household. The design and development of these devices will be conducted at Nokia’s Chennai-based R&D center, with manufacturing efforts in Noida undertaken in cooperation with Dixon.
This partnership is not Dixon’s first venture with major tech firms; it has previously collaborated with giants like Samsung, Xiaomi, Google, HP, and Asus for manufacturing various technology products in India. Established in 1993 and based in Noida, Dixon has evolved from manufacturing color TVs to an extensive range of electronic products across multiple sectors, boasting revenues of Rs. 17,691 crore last year and employing 2,840 individuals.
As India’s electronics manufacturing sector flourishes, fueled by governmental incentives and increasing exports, the presence of major global tech companies in India is expected to continue rising.
