Reliance Industries and Nvidia have joined forces to establish a robust AI infrastructure across India, a development announced at the Nvidia AI Summit 2024 in Mumbai. The discussion, featuring Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, highlighted this ambitious initiative.
Under this partnership, Reliance will implement Nvidia’s state-of-the-art GB 200 supercomputer technology to create an extensive AI network. “We’re starting with the absolute best technology available,” Ambani stated during the conversation at the Jio World Centre, mentioning plans for an expandable 1 GW infrastructure.
The aim of this collaboration is to extend AI technology to India’s vast population affordably, mirroring the impact Reliance’s Jio had on mobile data costs. Jio’s success in offering data at significantly lower costs than the global average illustrates its capacity to scale technology access economically.
Huang pointed out India’s distinct position in the AI landscape, backed by its vast IT workforce, extensive digital data, and large market size, which collectively foster a thriving environment for AI growth. With over 10,000 engineers in India, Nvidia views this partnership as key to nurturing local AI talents.
This initiative also supports Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for self-reliant AI development in India, emphasizing the nation’s potential to process and add value to its data domestically, rather than relying on external intelligence.
Both leaders also touched on the importance of open-source AI models like Meta’s Llama in advancing AI accessibility, suggesting it could serve as a basis for developing sophisticated language models tailored for Indian languages.
This strategic alliance between Nvidia and Reliance signifies a major leap in advancing India’s AI capabilities, leveraging Nvidia’s technological prowess and Reliance’s infrastructural strength.
