World Economic Forum Highlights Top 10 Emerging Technologies to Tackle Global Challenges

The World Economic Forum has released its annual Top 10 Emerging Technologies Report, showcasing innovations with the highest potential to positively impact the world over the next three to five years.

“Organizations make better decisions when they understand future-shaping factors. This report identifies technologies that could profoundly influence societies and economies,” said Jeremy Jurgens, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum and Head of the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “It also highlights technologies that can revolutionize connectivity, address climate change, and drive innovation across various fields.”

The Top 10 Emerging Technologies of 2024 include:

  2. Privacy-enhancing technologies: Synthetic data offers new ways to protect personal privacy while facilitating global data sharing and collaboration, particularly in health-related research.
  3. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces: These surfaces turn walls into intelligent components for wireless communication, enhancing energy efficiency and applications like smart factories.
  4. High-altitude platform stations: Using aircraft, blimps, and balloons, these systems extend mobile network access to remote regions, bridging the digital divide for over 2.6 billion people.
  5. Integrated sensing and communication: 6G networks enable simultaneous data collection and transmission, benefiting smart agriculture, environmental conservation, and urban planning.
  6. Immersive technology for the built world: Combining computing power with virtual and augmented reality, these technologies improve infrastructure and daily systems, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  7. Elastocalorics: Offering efficient and sustainable cooling solutions, elastocalorics release and absorb heat under mechanical stress.
  8. Carbon-capturing microbes: Engineered organisms convert emissions into biofuels, providing a promising approach to mitigating climate change.
  9. Alternative livestock feeds: Protein feeds from single-cell proteins, algae, and food waste offer sustainable solutions for agriculture.
  10. Genomics for transplants: The successful implantation of genetically engineered organs into humans marks a significant healthcare advancement.

The Top 10 Emerging Technologies Report, in its 12th edition, serves as a strategic intelligence source for professionals. It identifies technologies that are disruptive, attractive to investors and researchers, and expected to achieve significant scale within five years. This year’s report incorporates a new trend analysis methodology, ensuring the accuracy and relevance of the selected technologies through insights from over 300 world-leading academics and experts.

The 15th Annual Meeting of the New Champions will take place on 25-27 June 2024 in Dalian, China, under the theme, “Next Frontiers for Growth.” The meeting will gather around 1,600 leaders from business, government, civil society, and international organizations to generate insights and solutions that spur positive economic momentum globally.
