India to Bolster Global Climate Initiatives with Green Hydrogen Mission

During a significant bilateral discussion on US-India Civil Nuclear Commerce at Prithvi Bhavan in New Delhi, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, outlined the pivotal role of the Green Hydrogen Mission in India’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions in heavy industries, transport, and energy sectors.

He announced, “India aims to Boost Global Climate Efforts through the Green Hydrogen Mission and Collaboration on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).”

Dr. Singh detailed how this mission is critical for promoting innovation in clean technology and achieving worldwide climate objectives. He underscored India’s preparedness to spearhead the shift towards a sustainable energy landscape, backed by robust policies and global alliances.

Furthering the Indo-US space collaboration, he disclosed that an astronaut from India’s Gaganyaan Mission is set to join the International Space Station (ISS), a milestone in international space relations.

Dr. Singh also highlighted ongoing international efforts and the development of regulatory frameworks supporting the adoption of SMRs, crucial for India’s clean energy ambitions and supporting its climate pledges.

He drew parallels between India’s National Research Foundation and the U.S. National Science Foundation, stressing their vital contributions to fostering scientific research and innovation.

Dr. Singh reiterated India’s dedication to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s climate action strategy, “Panchamrit,” which includes significant commitments like achieving 500 GW of non-fossil energy, reducing carbon emissions by 1 billion tonnes, and attaining net-zero by 2070.

The high-level meeting with US representatives, including John Podesta and David Turk from the US Department of Energy, concluded with both nations reaffirming their dedication to deepen cooperation in cutting-edge technologies, thereby enhancing economic growth, national security, and global technological leadership.
