Apple, the renowned iPhone manufacturer, announced on April 17 a collaboration with CleanMax, a leader in renewable energy, to invest in six rooftop solar projects in India with a total capacity of 14.4 megawatts. This initiative is part of Apple’s broader strategy to enhance its renewable energy footprint.
The solar installations will supply electricity to Apple’s corporate offices and its two new retail stores in Mumbai and New Delhi, according to a blog post by the U.S.-based technology giant. Apple has already reached a milestone of 100% clean energy usage for its global corporate operations as of 2018.
The company now powers its global operations and manufacturing supply chain with over 18 gigawatts of clean electricity, a significant increase from the amount in 2020. Furthermore, Apple is committed to restoring 100% of the fresh water used in its corporate operations in regions facing water stress.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, emphasized the importance of clean energy and water for sustaining healthy communities and building a responsible business. “We’re progressing rapidly towards our Apple 2030 climate objective while undertaking the long-term tasks of transforming electrical grids and revitalizing watersheds to pave the way for a sustainable future,” she stated.
Apple also maintains additional clean energy projects globally, including an expansion of its solar portfolio in Michigan, USA, and a collaboration in Spain set to launch a 105 megawatts solar project by year-end.
Kuldeep Jain, Managing Director of CleanMax, expressed pride in the joint venture, noting it as a significant milestone. “This collaboration exemplifies an industry-leading approach to green energy assets creation, and it’s encouraging to see other consumer brands moving towards sustainability,” Jain commented.
