EU and India Forge Alliance to Advance EV Battery Recycling Innovations

In an important move toward advancing Battery Recycling Technologies for Electric Vehicles (EVs), the European Union (EU) and India have entered into a partnership. This collaboration introduces an Expression of Interest (EOI) aimed at startups in the sector, kickstarting a matchmaking event designed to bolster EU-Indian SMEs and startup engagement in eco-friendly technologies.

Scheduled for June, this event seeks to foster the exchange of vital knowledge and expertise, essential for enhancing the reuse of scarce materials and promoting a shift to carbon neutrality in both regions.

The initiative’s core mission is to create a venue where startups from India and the EU, specializing in EV Battery Recycling Technologies, can present their groundbreaking solutions.

Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood, India’s Principal Scientific Adviser, emphasizes the commitment to nurturing a cooperative space where sustainability and innovation are the foundations of a thriving circular economy.

Twelve startups, with an equal split between the two regions, will have the opportunity to present their ideas. Out of these, six finalists, three from each area, will win a chance to explore each other’s markets.

This endeavor aims not only to spotlight startups focused on battery recycling innovation but also to facilitate opportunities for collaboration, customer engagement, and investment exploration.

Marc Lemaître, the European Commission’s Director-General for Research and Innovation, highlighted the event as a pivotal step towards fostering a sustainable and circular economy.

Startups interested in participating have until April 30 to apply via the official government website.

This initiative follows the formation of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC) on February 6, 2023, a result of discussions between the Indian Prime Minister and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, emphasizing a strategic collaboration to tackle challenges at the intersection of trade, technology, and security.
