In a pioneering move, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor India Limited and Tamil Nadu’s investment promotion agency, Guidance Tamil Nadu, has inked an agreement to create a ‘Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub.’ This ambitious venture is aimed at nurturing a robust green hydrogen ecosystem in India.
IIT Madras will spearhead the establishment of this innovation hub, focusing on localizing manufacturing, skill development, creating validation platforms, and conducting thorough landscape analyses for the hydrogen ecosystem. The institute will provide the necessary infrastructure and develop a comprehensive curriculum for skill enhancement.
Additionally, IIT Madras will set up a Centre of Excellence, serving as a think tank that will host annual conferences, workshops, and research publications.
Guidance Tamil Nadu will actively support this initiative through policy advocacy for hydrogen-related technologies and regulatory development.
Unsoo Kim, MD and CEO of Hyundai Motor India Ltd., emphasized the global vision of fostering a Hydrogen Society, making hydrogen accessible and sustainable worldwide. He highlighted the collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government and IIT Madras to establish a dedicated Hydrogen Resource Centre, contributing to the localization of a hydrogen ecosystem and promoting employment and skill development.
Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, underscored the significance of transitioning to non-fossil fuels to meet sustainable development goals. He lauded Hyundai’s funding support as a timely boost for the Hydrogen Valley project, predicting that the consortium would provide feasible solutions for green hydrogen adoption in the years ahead.
The signing of this agreement occurred during the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024, witnessed by TRB Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce, Tamil Nadu.
