IIT-Madras and Shell India Launch Joint Energy Research Center

IIT-Madras and Shell India have inaugurated the Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research (SICER), a collaborative initiative aimed at fostering research and development in the energy sector. The new center will focus on pioneering solutions for the energy transition, incubating startups, and leveraging the combined expertise of industry and academia.

SICER is set to enhance innovation, research, development, and the piloting and commercialization of new energy technologies. This partnership further includes the establishment of the Shell Chair Professorship to facilitate ongoing knowledge exchange between Shell experts and IIT Madras. Dr. Satyanarayanan Seshadri, head of the IITM energy consortium, has been appointed as the first Shell Chair Professor.

Dr. Ajay Mehta, VP of Engineering Technology at Shell, highlighted the importance of this collaboration, stating, “This partnership will enhance our ability to share knowledge and resources with IIT Madras while tapping into their robust R&D capabilities and innovation ecosystem to tackle the global challenge of energy transition.”

The Energy Consortium at IIT-Madras, recognized as an Institute of Eminence Centre, conducts extensive research across various domains of energy including generation, storage, conversion, and distribution. This includes efforts in carbon capture and storage, renewable energy technologies, and advanced energy storage solutions beyond lithium, aiming to redefine energy management and efficiency in both AC and DC microgrids through collaborative industry-academia-government projects.
